Binghamton Castle on the Hill
BJH was part of a team led by WXY Architects hired by Empire State Development (ESD) to evaluate the market for adaptive reuse of a disused mental health institution (The Castle). ESD aimed to preserve the historic character of this landmark while simultaneously returning it to productive use. Initially, BJH and WXY held stakeholder interviews in order to understand the need of Binghamton’s community. BJH then conducted a market analysis that included demographics and real estate statistics. The team created three redevelopment options for further consideration. In addition, the surplus land around the building was evaluated for redevelopment opportunities.
