NYC Publishing Industry Economic Impact Study
BJH conducted a study of New York City’s publishing industry on behalf of the Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment (MOME) as part of agency’s efforts to build understanding of NYC’s creative economy sectors and support their growth. BJH first defined the publishing industry in terms of core sectors and sub-sectors that span content ideation, generation, distribution, and consumption. The team then conducted an economic impact study – quantifying the industry’s direct, indirect, and induced impacts for the year 2020 – and evaluated various other industry characteristics and trends (e.g., workforce demographics, occupational characteristics, and real estate clusters). Our data-driven analysis was supplemented by a comprehensive literature review and interviews with over 30 industry leaders. The team ultimately put together a final report that paired industry analysis with actionable recommendations for the City to support the publishing industry as it navigates a challenging economic environment and the rapid digitization of media.
